The Newman Independent (newspaper)

This local newspaper has been published since the late 1800s. NRLD owns all existing copies of the paper either on microfilm or in paper copies thanks to the cooperation of the current publishers, Todd and Samantha Hutchinson. These are available for public use at the library. Copies can be made of the microfilm editions, however, the older bound paper copies are too fragile for copying. Digital cameras may be used to capture images from the bound issues otherwise researchers are welcome to transcribe the information they want.

These papers are not currently indexed. A recent donation in memory of local resident, Jane Hooe, will be used to create an index of births, marriages, obituaries, military service, anniversaries, and significant events from the 1940s through the 1960s. The completed index will be available at the library and on this website.

Jane Hooe and Carl Skinner Memorial Newspaper Index

This is an index of the Newman Independent newspapers from 1928-1942 (1929 includes only Jan. -Apr.; and 1942 ends in March), and 1946-1949 thanks to the generosity of the friends of Jane Hooe and Carl Skinner compiled by Ferrin McGinness, Taylor Horn, and Anna Partenheimer.  You may access the site by going to the following link at Googledocs.  The list is in alphabetical order by last name.  Once you have found a person, you should note the date and page number.  Visit the library or write to us (librarian@newmanregionallibrary.org ) to get a digital photo or transcription of the page you want.  You can search the document using your browser's "find on this page" under the Edit menu.  The index includes birth, marriage, anniversary, military, and funeral articles.  "Way Back" under the notes column refers to an article that referenced back issues of the newspaper from 25-50 years before.  Please let us know at the above e-mail if you find any errors or have difficulty accessing the file.  A hardcopy of the index is also available at the library.  This is a work in progress so check back for updates.  Last updated 10/27/2009.

Newman High School Memorabilia
Newman Regional Library is the repository of yearbooks, trophies, photographs, uniforms and class lists from Newman High School.  The school operated from 1914 to1994 when it was closed to merge with the adjacent district to form Shiloh  School District.  Local alumnae maintain the collection, which is a valuable resource for the community and researchers.
